In her sculpting process, Sandra makes smaller maquettes from clay to visualise what the sculpture may look like. This is integral to developing an idea that may or may not inform the outcome.
In the case of these cedar wood sculptures, the clay maquettes informed the design to a point, thereafter the grain of the wood, the ‘imperfections’ and the act of carving by hand, and the openness to accepting the process, guided the final outcome.
