The Black Forest in Germany is one of the most well-known enchanted cedar forests, bursting with tales of mythical creatures.
Named after such a folktale, the story of Lorelei (pronounced law·ruh·lai) is about a beautiful water nymph who lived along the Rhine River flowing through the Black Forest. When she was human, her lover was faithless, so in despair she threw herself into the river and was transformed into a siren whose overwhelmingly seductive aura drew passing sailors into their watery graves. Hypnotised by her beauty, they would crash into the bank and sink.
Today, you will find a statue of Lorelei close to Sankt Goarshausen, overlooking this perilous stretch of water. (4)
